Hosting Frequently Asked Questions

Getting your site up and running

How do I upload my web pages to the server?
When you sign up for your hosting account, you will be given a username and password to login to the server where your site is being hosted. You can FTP to your site by typing "ftp www.mydomain.com" at a dos prompt or by using any one of many graphical ftp tools, such as WSFTP or CuteFTP. Once you are logged onto the server you can type a ? at the prompt to see a list of commands if you logged in via the command line or use one of the buttons in your graphical ftp tool to move or see files.

To upload your web pages or text files, you basically want to do a "put" in ascii mode to the desired directory. To upload your picture or image files you want to do a "put" in binary mode. Generally your files should all be named in lower case letters, and must have the proper extensions, e.g. .jpg or .html, etc.

I can't see my pages, what's wrong?
If you go to your site, www.yourcompany.com, and see nothing, the reason is probably that you have not named your main page either, index.html for UNIX hosting, or default.htm for NT/2000 hosting. Another leading cause is that for UNIX hosting on a Cobalt, you must upload your web page files to the /web directory and not the web directory for the username you are logged in as. When you first FTP into your domain, you are presented with a set of instructions of where to upload the files. Follow these instructions! The Cobalt directories are set up like this so that you can offer multiple users their own websites in their own directories keeping them distinct from the main website.

DNS and Name Registration

Can I have multiple domains pointing at my one site?
You can have as many domains as you would like pointed at a single site. Just let us know what the names are, and if you need new domains registered, we will do that also.

To use your DNS, what do I need to do?
Please send an email to WebPG Hostmaster with the names and IP addresses for the domains you desire and we will include the entries in our DNS files. Then please reference the following nameservers with the name registrar (Network Solutions, etc).

Machine Hostname IP Address
Primary Nameserver NS1.WEBPG.NET 208.44.242.31
Secondary Nameserver NS2.WEBPG.NET 208.44.242.32

The Web Presence Group also offers name registration through our membership in OpenSRS at competitive rates. More Information >>

I have a name registered with another provider. How do I move the site to you?
Just let us know, and we will make all the arrangements. We will submit a change notice to InterNIC. You will receive an acknowledgement of the change from InterNIC. Just reply to their email, saying "Yes" where they ask if you acknowledge the change. In 1 to 3 days, the name change will be complete.

Site traffic

How can I tell how many hits I am getting on my site?
Each client has a URL which allows them to view their usage. For UNIX hosting on a Cobalt, the graphs are controlled from your GUI interface, and you can select the type of statistics you would like to see. For the NT and business hosting accounts, you will be given a URL which allows you to view your traffic with detailed graphs.

Secure Certificates for online sales

How do I make the website secure for online sales?
Securing a website takes two things; the webserver must have a digital certificate installed, and the web page must be programmed to use the certificate. The digital certificate is granted by a trusted third party which certifies that your company is indeed the company which is represented by the website (you are not an impostor trying to defraud the public). These certificates are a computer code which is installed on the webserver. Once the certificate has been installed, the page designer creates a secure link. This is done by changing the "http://" at the beginning of a URL to "https://". The extra "s" tells the webserver to make the link secure.

How much does a certificate cost?
The digital certificate is available from several sources. Two of the largest certificate authorities are Verisign and Thawte. The certificate costs about $125 per year. We can handle the application for you, and we must generate a digital key from the webserver before applying for the certificate.

Server Use

Can I load on XYZ software package?
Maybe, depending on what the software is. If it is software that can run directly out of your own directory, it will probably work fine. If it is software that needs to be loaded on the entire box, that all who use the box have access to, then no. It would probably be time for you to consider a dedicated server at that point.

Are there any restrictions on the use of your hosting?
Simply put, we do not allow use of the server which could be prosecuted under any law having jurisdiction. Examples of uses which would not be permitted are any illegal materials (copyright violations, warez, etc) or SPAM (unsolicited commercial email).

Do you allow adult content?
No, adult content is not permitted under our acceptable use policy.

Account Information

How do I change my account to a higher level?
Just send us an email or give us a call if you would like to move up from a basic to a business or e-commerce hosting package utilizing a secure certificate for taking credit cards or financial information. You also may want to consider moving to your own dedicated server. We offer many packages, with one suitable for your needs.

What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept nearly any form of payment you may want to use: VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Check, Money Order, Wire Transfer, PayPal, BillPoint, and Western Union. If there is another method you would like to use, please contact us and we will consider it. We want to make it easy for you!

Can I pay online?

Who do I contact for administrative or billing questions?
Please contact Customer Service.
