Dial-Up Internet Connection Setup

We have included some instructions for setting up your new connection with The Web Presence Group. Since you are reading this, we can assume that you already have a connection with someone so much of your headaches have been solved already.

Windows 95/98/ME

Windows 95/98/ME itself includes the components necessary to make the connection to us. Usually, all the setup for a connection can be done with one screen.

Make the Connection
Click on the following:
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Dial-Up Networking -> Make New Connection
This should bring up a dialog box for setting up a new connection. If you don't have dial-up networking installed, then you need to install this from your windows disks.

  1. The first dialog box asks for the name of the system you are dialing. Type in "The Web Presence Group" then click on the "Next" button.
  2. The next dialog box asks for the phone number. Use the primary phone number that you received when you signed up.
  3. The "Connect Using" box at the bottom should have yur modem filled in. If not, then select the modem from the drop-down list. If there are no modems in the list, then you need to install the software for the modem. When you have finished, press the "OK" button.
Now that the new connection has been made, we will need to do some more configuration.
  1. Single-click on the new icon to highlight it. Right-click on the highlighted icon to bring up a short menu and select the "Properties" entry.
  2. Click on the "Server Type" button to display the Server Type setup dialog box.
  3. For the Type of Dial-Up Server, select "PPP, Windows 95, Windows NT 35, Internet". This is the basic PPP type of connection we support.
  4. Under Advanced Options, be sure that only the checkbox entitled "Enable Software Compression" is checked.
  5. Under Allowed Network Protocols, be sure that only "TCP/IP" is checked.
  6. Click on the "TCP/IP settings" button to bring up the TCP/IP dialog box.
  7. Click on the radio button entitled "Server assigned IP address"
  8. Click on the radio button entitled "Specify name server address"
  9. Under Primary DNS enter the value 208.44.242.31
  10. Under Secondary DNS enter the value 208.4.242.32
  11. For both WINS enter 0.0.0.0
  12. Make sure the checkbox entitled "Use IP header compression" is checked.
  13. Make sure the checkbox entitled "Use default gateway on remote network" is checked.
  14. Click OK to return to the Server Type dialog box, then click OK to return to the General setup screen.
Now we need to be sure the connection properties are right.
  1. Still from the General screen, click on the "Configure" button to display the modem configuration dialog box.
  2. Click on the "Options" tab.
  3. Make sure that the only box that is checked is the very bottom one entitled "Display modem status"
  4. click on "OK" to return to the General screen, then click "OK" to exit the properties settings.
Now, all of the dialup connection properties should be set. Double-click on the icon entitled "The Web Presence Group". When prompted, enter your username and password (be sure the "Save password" box is checked) and click on the "Connect" button. You should now hear the modem dialing and then shortly you will be online.

After the connection has been made, start up Internet Explorer ("The Internet" icon on the dektop, or use Netscape or another browser to surf the web.
